Trencin as a new ecological and economical hub in Europe. (Wider context)

In a territorial vision, the competition provides the opportunity of converting Trencin in an important entrance to river Vah’s valley in accordance to its strategical situation regarding to Europe. The river Vah is an important ecological connector and a great supporter axis of different activities. With these considerations, the project identifies a territorial system which maintains the character of a regional “hub” of green economies. The proposal aims to create an exciting neighborhood where leisure, lifestyles, business, sports, tourism, universities and culture are all in common without loosing Trencin’s identity.

Preservation of heritage assets and traditional identity (Concept)

In a local vision, we understand Trencin’s identity  from the comprehension of two complementary heritage assets: the green and the urban ones.

Trencin is green. In a territorial scale, Brenzina and the river are big green structures. In a domestic scale, the city shows a continuum peppered of gardens and greens mixed in the urban tissue. In spring Trencin offers intense greens, in autumn brown and yellow trees and in winter the trees discover their branches. These natural elements are a magnificent show in Trencin so the project aims to revalue and to convert in one key factor to offer a new vitality.

Trencin is urban. We are interested by the domestic space configuration and visuals of the historical city which are made by the rythms of traditional plots, the irregularity of heights, the proportion of private and public space and the flexibility of the tissue. We value strolling through narrow streets and the surprise effect when arriving at a open public space. We also consider the compacity and the housing type global and diverse. The reinterpretation of the grain and the traditional plot allows thinking about a domestic grid but also in an urban reference.

A new image of preexisting. A reinterpretation of traditional logics.

From the consideration of the urban and natural logics as the great potentials to reinforce the future city, the proposal aims to build a contemporary image of urbanity based on a city more integrated in landscape and territorial structure, with new spaces where architecture and nature fusion to generate new fluvial atmospheres. Our proposal consists in the continuation of urban grid to the river respecting the mainmwooded areas and introducing new green points to reinforce the transversal permeabilities from the city centre to the river. The new development offers irregular streets, urban blocks characterized by different types of plots, commercial ground floors and a new silhouette of Trencin that dialogues with the existing one and offers the mix urban and green as a new identity of the rivershore. The new architecture is a contemporary one, with new materiality in the façades and roofs. In this neighborhood, the green and the blue appear surprisingly after strolling the narrow streets.

The graft of a new vitality (Programme)

The new urban fabric is compact and flexible to adapt itself to the future Trencin necessities. It can be adapted to integrate more facilities, tertiary or more public spaces. The project also shows the contact potential of the neighborhood with its narrow context. The main new places are:

– Urban-green grid: mixed uses and different kind of public spaces and existing fragments of parks. Ground floors can offer commercial or local activities. We can think about introducing a new hotel and office buildings also.

– Riverside walk: A new shore is a project of walkways and platforms in contact with the river. It offers new exciting activities of leisure as pools, a leisure port, balconies, children’s playground, restaurants and commercial groundfloors. The actual train track is transformed into a hanging garden walkway.

– Wetlands park: In the flood area we propose to revalorize this riverine landscape and the direct contact of the water and the ground. We propose to consider this area as a botanical garden with soft paths to discover the vegetation. This area integrates the eco center, an athletics track, and a skate park.

– Leisure park: In contact with the stadium, universities and trains encounter, the urban fabric builds a new façade with some facilities as a  multifunctional cultural hall, a market and also a sports center and a business incubator in relation with universities. This new space is thought as the new centrality of Trencin. The public space is an extension of the city park until the riverfront.

New permeabilities to the riverfront. (Transport concept)

The goal of the project is to cross the infrastructure barriers in an urban pedestrian logic by the continuity of urban streets. The proposal is to divide the Hasicska road in two streets transforming it into a new boulevard that is integrated in the urban tissue. Both if the Southeast Bypass is build or not, this solution has the capacity of offer pedestian crossings from the historical city to the river. These two new avenues encounter in front of the city park again to continue to the station. On the other hand, new bicycles paths are integrated to guarantee the loop walk between both riversides.

The plot as the new urban support

The focus is to offer an attractive and functional urban fabric. We consider the plot as an element to develop new urban regulations for mixed typologies and an irregular skyline but having some flexibility at the same time.

The project works sustainability parameters desiderable for a balanced relation with the environment. Reducing energy consumption of residential units will be developed primarily trough passive systems but also by using the natural elements as water, sun, wind and vegetation in the designs of new pieces of the urban fabric. The goal is to offer a self sufficient development.
